Postdoctoral Research Fellows - Center for History and New Media

The Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media (RRCHNM) at George Mason University is pleased to announce that we are seeking candidates for two (2) postdoctoral fellowships in digital history. These fellowships will begin in late August 2020.

These are one-year research postdoctoral fellowships with the possibility of renewal for one more year, depending on funding and performance. The primary responsibilities will include working with the staff and faculty at RRCHNM on existing projects and developing proposals for externally funded digital humanities projects that will be created at RRCHNM. Postdoctoral fellows will develop proposals out of their own research interests and expertise, in addition to collaborating with other investigators on proposals.

One postdoctoral fellow will spend a portion of their time on Tropy, a software project for archival research developed at RRCHNM and the rest of their time developing new projects. The other postdoctoral fellow will work for a portion of their time on other ongoing projects at the Center and the rest on new project ideas. In their cover letter, applicants should indicate which projects at the Center they are interested in contributing to and what expertise they would bring to our work and what new project ideas they are interested in developing.

Fellows who generate sufficient external funding to finance their position beyond the two years of the fellowship will have the possibility of being hired as research (non-tenure track) faculty at RRCHNM beyond the term of their fellowship.

About the Roy Rosenzweig Center for History and New Media RRCHNM is the country's oldest digital humanities center. Since 1994-under the founding direction of Roy Rosenzweig-the Center has worked to create software and websites that are freely available to the public. Those digital projects emerge from our engagement with the practice of history in universities, schools, libraries, archives, museums, and local communities. They are shaped by collaborations with practitioners and audiences, and are produced by teams of researchers, developers, designers and graduate and undergraduate students. In 2018, our projects attracted over 37 million visits and nearly 20 million unique visitors. In 2019, the Center's staff includes four faculty members, one postdoctoral fellow, nine professional staff, and nine graduate research assistants. We also work closely with several faculty partners and employ a large number of graduate research assistants. In the past 12 months, our work has attracted more than $2 million in external funding from a wide variety of sources.

Required Qualifications: * PhD in History, Art History, or related humanities field by August 1, 2020; * Prior experience working with a range of digital humanities methods and approaches, whether individually or collaboratively; * Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in an environment focused on innovation; * Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Preferred Qualifications: * Prior experience in writing or managing grants is preferred but not expected.
