The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) is recruiting a mid-career Epidemiologist to advance the population health agenda in an expanding Division of Epidemiology & Population Health.

The successful candidate will undertake the following key activities:
  • Assist with developing the population health scope-of-work for FCHD, informed by the Fairfax County Community Health Improvement Plan, data on health burden and disparities, emerging threats, and county priorities. Current priority areas include opioids and other substance use; mental health and suicide; and nutrition and food insecurity.
  • Conduct surveillance in priority areas to monitor health status, outcomes, and disparities among the Fairfax County population and present data in dashboards, reports and presentations to inform decision-making.
  • Analyze county-level data and implement epidemiological investigations in the community to guide public health actions. Analyze social determinants of health and underlying causes affecting health behaviors and outcomes.
  • Provide technical expertise and/or lead in designing and implementing evaluations of programs to improve population health outcomes, using evaluation results and quality improvement methods to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Develop and implement population health research, sharing results in presentations and publications.
  • Collaborate with other programs within FCHD (including the Division of Community Health Development, the Division of Health Services, and the Health in All Policies Coordinator); with other Fairfax County agencies; and with community organizations to improve health outcomes and reduce health disparities.
  • Supervise and support Population Health Epidemiology Section professional staff, fellows and interns.
As the Division includes both communicable disease and population health foci, there will be opportunities to contribute across the spectrum of public health challenges. Fairfax County is the largest health jurisdiction in Virginia and in the National Capital Region, including about 1.2 million people. The population is demographically diverse, with about 30% of residents being foreign born. FCHD's location allows for the development of partnerships with leaders in public health at Federal agencies, universities, and non-profits across the National Capital Region. Employment Standards MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Advanced degree in epidemiology: doctorate degree (PhD) plus two years of experience in epidemiology-related work, or master's degree in Public Health (MPH) or Master of Science (MS) with graduate work in epidemiology and/or biostatistics plus five years of experience in epidemiology-related work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license.
AED- Required within 60 days
CPR- Required within 60 days

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Background in epidemiology and population health. Experience working with community-based programs and program management. Strong data analysis skills. Supervisory experience. Clear and concise oral and written communication skills.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check, a sanction screening, a check of the Child Protective Services Registry, and a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.
Tuberculosis test.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Job is generally sedentary in nature, however, job entails walking, standing, sitting, climbing stairs, reaching and bending; uses hands to grasp, handle, or feel. Visual acuity is required to read data on a computer monitor; ability to drive a vehicle. Incumbent must be able to operate keyboard driven equipment and computer. Position frequently communicates and must be able to exchange accurate information with others verbally and in writing. Employee may be required to lift up or carry up to 25 lbs. occasionally. Generally works in an office environment yet may occasionally be required to perform job duties outside of the typical office setting. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
